Why are you here?

Hey, happy Monday? Good weekend? Enjoy the sun? Ready to make a difference this week?

Why the hesitation?

If you’re not waking up this morning wanting to make a difference for your employees, then ask yourself a simple question, “Why are you here?”

To make money? There are better paying jobs than HR.

To make history? Go marry an emu, it’s a quicker route.

To make whoopee? No-one wants to screw the HR guy….well not in that way, anyway….

So why are you here and who are you here for?

Let me fast track the answer for you, I know it has been a sunny indulgent weekend.

Your employees.

You are here for your employees.

If you don’t understand that, if you can’t comprehend that, then let me know? I’ll be there to help you through.

If you don’t agree, if you can’t agree. Then tell me, who else do you serve?

The shareholders? Leave that to the Finance guys.

The customers? Marketing are all over it.

If in any way you’re convinced by this….and you really should be. Then, go make a difference for your people, today.

They and I will thank you for it.

HR? They’re to make people’s lives unpleasant in my experience, either with petty rules and or making people redundant. In all the places I’ve worked I have never found them to be particularly useful.

I’m sorry that has been your experience. That is what I want to change.

It’s not just the places you work either. It’s dealing with HR people when you apply for jobs and go through the whole degrading recruitment where you are essentially treated as a piece of “meat”.

Don’t start me on recruitment consultants either, they are a very low form of “life”, worse even than estate agents (and that’s saying something).

The very phrase “human resources” says all you need to know about the HR department.

I’m not a big fan either. What would you replace it with?

As somebody who has a keen interest in discourse analysis and language in general I find “human resources” offensive in that it implies you are an “object” rather than a living breathing human being etc. I object to be measured/benchmarked against other people as this is derogatory and insulting to your character and personality. I suppose “personnel department” is an improvement.

Today I made people smile, I helped them, I was useful human resource, I made their life at work a little easier, I even did something that was nothing to do with my job, because I care and really enjoy what I do! Best of all – no policies were written or people written off in the process 🙂

      That’s what I’m talking about!

In my view HR is also there to support the organisation achieve there goals this means suppprting the management team.
Ethicalcompanies has obviously had some bad experiences. Its sadly true that sometimes HR is put up as a scapegoat for management decisions and actions.
In a redundancy situation I have always made sure that they are present and do the talking – afterall they made the decision not HR

Indeed….sometimes we take one for the team. I’m ok with that, as long as other areas are doing the same for us at time. We can’t be the ethical and moral dumping ground.
